Connected Again

Woo hoo!  Start spreading the news!  Time to celebrate!  I. HAVE. INTERNET.

Yay!   After five months of what I can only describe as piss-taking by APUA my internet provider, on Wednesday I finally decided, “Enough, already!”  I had told myself I couldn’t afford to pay for a contract with another provider – I know, how negative is that????   But when I worked it out, all the coffees I was having in coffee shops with internet – whose own internet sometimes wasn’t working either, so good is the reception island-wide! – plus petrol driving their or to my lovely friend B’s house to use her wifi that it wouldn’t actually cost me any more.  So I went and signed up.  There was a hiccough – when isn’t there with me?  They were supposed to have come yesterday but couldn’t so I had a bit of a foot stamp on the phone with the supervisor and this morning they rang at minutes after nine to say they’d be with me before ten and by ten thirty it was all up and running!

So: Goodbye, APUA and Hello, ACT!

The only bit of negativity surrounding all this is that the whole island might lose internet and power and water supplies in a couple of days as Hurricane Irma heads towards us.  It’s a horrible state to be in; here everyone is wishing and hoping and praying she veers a bit further north or south and misses us completely but by doing that we’re hoping she takes someone else out.  And the met people and hurricane specialists can’t say for certain for another day or so which way she’s going to go.  So we’re sort of in limbo.

I’m stocking up a bit with drinking water and tinned food and will spend Sunday prepping food but, of course, we could be without power for who knows how long so I don’t want stuff to be going off.  Mind you, having some chicken satay going off in the defrosting freezer might be the least of my worries…

But this is a time for positivity if ever there was one!  So, I am declaring that I am certain Irma will veer north and take herself off over the Atlantic avoiding landfall all together.
