Woo hoo!  Start spreading the news!  Time to celebrate!  I. HAVE. INTERNET.

Yay!   After five months of what I can only describe as piss-taking by APUA my internet provider, on Wednesday I finally decided, “Enough, already!”  I had told myself I couldn’t afford to pay for a contract with another provider – I know, how negative is that????   But when I worked it out, all the coffees I was having in coffee shops with internet – whose own internet sometimes wasn’t working either, so good is the reception island-wide! – plus petrol driving their or to my lovely friend B’s … Read the rest »

Worst Nightmare

No – not Brexit!
I have had a writers nightmare this week. Or rather nightmares, in the plural. APUA (Antigua Public Utilities Authority – motto Necessary….for life) are in the process of “load shedding” at the moment. I do not understand what this is, but it involves the power going off for two or three hours several times a day. On Monday, I had my coffee and breakfast, flexed my fingers and sat down ready to get on with my book when I realised the power was off and both my iPad and laptop needed charging. The biggest ‘problem’ I’ve got here is not having a car. I used to have an old, but very nice, dark blue Hyundai, but it went to that great scrapyard in the sky a couple of years ago. Actually, someone bought it from there and did it up and put things right and now it’s a lovely car – but no longer mine! So, I get a lift wherever I can, hire a car for the odd day or go on the bus.

Days Are Flying By

Where have three weeks gone?  Huh?  Who can tell me?  I can’t believe I’ve only got three days left before I leave Antigua.  I have this sort of panicky feeling that I’m running out of time.

Parked Up Sidekick Alley

Last week it was such a refreshing surprise to hear a woman’s voice on Radio 2.  Jeremy Vine was off on his hols and Vanessa Feltz was sitting in for him.  It had dawned on me a few days earlier that Radio 2 has male presenters on the whole day through; Chris Evans, Ken Bruce, Jeremy Vine, Steve Wright and Simon Mayo.  Poor old Vanessa gets the up-at-dawn-slot of 5-7.30am and then the only other female voices heard from then on are giving the traffic news or occasionally reading the news.  Janice Long gets midnight.  The only female I can … Read the rest »
